National Apprenticeship Week 2026: A Q&A with RiskSTOP Group Apprentices

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, which celebrates the impact apprenticeships have across UK industries, we sat down with two of our own apprentices at RiskSTOP Group, working within RebuildCostASSESSMENT.com, to hear about their experiences.

Josh Skeldon (left) and Kelly Buck (right), our apprentices studying the Level 3 Surveying Technician apprenticeship, provided by JACE. They're standing in our office with blue and white wall. Visible text on the wall: "We Keep People Safe and Secure." Bright, professional setting.

Kelly Buck and Josh Skeldon are both completing surveying apprenticeships supported by JACE, combining academic learning with hands-on experience in a professional environment. Here, they share what attracted them to an apprenticeship, what they’ve learned so far, and their advice for others considering a similar path.

What motivated you to start your apprenticeship with RiskSTOP Group?

Kelly: “I’ve always had a love for property and helped my parents with improving their home, but I never found the right opportunity to turn that into a career. I previously worked in investment banking, which I enjoyed, but I wanted a better work-life balance and stronger growth opportunities. RiskSTOP Group & RCA gave me everything I was looking for: professional development, balance, and a genuinely supportive working environment.”

Josh: “The opportunity to gain a recognised qualification while progressing my career was the main driver for me.”

What has been the most valuable skill or knowledge you’ve gained so far?

Kelly: “Understanding the level of responsibility a surveyor holds has been eye-opening. The depth of knowledge and experience required is huge, and the apprenticeship really highlights how important accuracy and professional judgement are in this role.”

Josh: “Learning and applying RICS standards and guidance has been fundamental to my role and professional development.”

Can you share a moment where your learning made a real impact at work?

Kelly: “Site surveys completely changed my perspective. Seeing construction methods in person — things you’d never pick up from desktop assessments — strengthened my understanding. I was also able to use my own home renovation as part of my coursework, creating bills of quantities aligned with industry standards.”

Josh: “Leading a site survey and applying theory in a real-world setting, from client care through to quantification and costing, was a moment where everything came together.”

How has RiskSTOP Group supported you throughout your apprenticeship?

Kelly: “The support from RiskSTOP Group & RCA has been outstanding. Experienced colleagues have offered guidance, and management allowed flexibility around assessments when needed. I’ve always felt encouraged to succeed.”

Josh: “I’ve been given dedicated study time each week, and colleagues have supported me throughout, right through to my AssocRICS submission.”

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in surveying?

Kelly: “Ask questions, get involved in discussions, and don’t be afraid to speak up. It really helps build confidence and confirm your understanding.”

Josh: “I’d highly recommend it. Learning on the job while studying gives you experience you simply can’t replicate elsewhere.”

As National Apprenticeship Week 2026 highlights, apprenticeships continue to play a vital role in developing skilled professionals. At RiskSTOP Group, we’re proud to support apprentices as they build long-term, rewarding careers in surveying and risk management.
