Andropause: the hidden health issue men don’t talk about

A colleague at RiskSTOP Group recently contacted one of our leadership team to raise awareness about a condition that’s under-discussed but widely experienced by men – Andropause. Also known as the “male menopause”, it refers to a gradual drop in testosterone levels, typically from age 40 onwards.
In support of their experience and to mark World Andropause Awareness Day, we’re sharing what we’ve learned, in the hope it helps others recognise the signs and take action.
What is andropause?
Andropause, medically referred to as Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome (TDS) or Late-Onset Hypogonadism, can affect energy, mood, sleep, libido and concentration. It often goes unnoticed because the symptoms appear gradually and are frequently mistaken for normal ageing.
“Testosterone levels are highest in the morning and taper off during the day. I do suffer from fatigue later in the day. Sleep is definitely affected.” our colleague shared.
Common Symptoms:
Low energy or fatigue
Mood changes or depression
Reduced libido
Muscle loss or weight gain
Difficulty focusing
Poor sleep
“It does creep up on you. Many, I would guess, just think they are slowing down due to age, but it can be rectified by correct diagnosis and treatment.”
Getting tested & treated
If you recognise any of these symptoms, speak to your GP. A morning blood test can measure testosterone levels, and if necessary, you may be referred for further testing. Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) may be an option, alongside lifestyle changes such as improved sleep, diet, and exercise.
“Anyone who has an afternoon ‘slump’ should chat to their GP and ask for a test.”
To better understand their symptoms, our colleague also took a Methylation Gene Test with MTHFR Genetics. This helped identify low levels of key enzymes linked to sleep and mood regulation.
“I would highly recommend [this] to anyone. It provided me with an in-depth insight into how my body works. A simple cheek swap sent in the post, and the results came in just 8 weeks. It’s the best £130 I’ve ever spent.”
Let’s talk about it
Our colleague has asked to remain anonymous, but is not silent. A big thank you to them for sharing their story with us and contributing to this piece.
Andropause is real. It’s manageable. And no one should feel embarrassed to talk about it. This World Andropause Awareness Day, we’re proud to help break the silence.
