In the latest episode of our People at the Heart podcast, RiskSTOP Group’s Head of IT, Martin Lake (or Martin J Lake, to be precise), joins Johnny Thomson to talk about the creative passion that sits alongside his career in technology: writing fantasy fiction.
Martin is the author of fantasy books Beyond the Stones and Daughter of Destiny, part of The Chronicles of the Realm series. What began as a New Year’s resolution around 12 years ago has become a published book series, an Amazon bestseller ranking, and a much-loved creative outlet.
The episode offers a warm glimpse into Martin’s writing journey, from early “encouragement” at home to the research, persistence and imagination involved in bringing a fantasy world to life.
“Discovering I had a creative side was a bit of a shock”
Martin is very open about his experience of becoming an author, sharing many stories throughout the episode, including the time he received brutally honest feedback from his wife, accidentally building a suspicious internet search history while researching fantasy warfare, and the surreal moment he found himself sitting just behind J.K. Rowling on an Amazon bestseller list.
At its heart, this is a conversation about the people behind the roles and the interests, stories and passions that make up the RiskSTOP Group community.
Listen to or watch the full episode of People at the Heart to hear Martin’s story, his inspiration for the books, and why he believes that anyone with a passion should give it a go.
